The work consists in the construction of two school buildings used as a crèche and nursery school, situated in the Municipality of Poirino in the province of Turin.
The buildings both envisage a single floor spanning a surface area of 1,570 square metres for the nursery school and 680 square metres for the crèche. The only work in reinforced concrete is envisaged for the base which consists of a concrete bed with related aerated loose floor foundation, above which the wooden structure was laid.
For the construction of the buildings, the decision was made to use natural materials only, starting with wood for the structure, cork and hemp for the insulation and plaster for the interiors.
From a construction perspective, the solution picked entailed load-bearing walls with Glulam frames clad on the exterior with a plastered cork cladding and on the interior with plasterboard lining. For the insulating material inside the wall panels, the chosen option was hemp, a natural material that is readily available in the area considering the numerous cultivations.
The load-bearing structure of the roof was built with Glulam beams which adapt perfectly to the irregular shape of the roofs. The ventilated roof pack envisages a hemp insulation and a waterproof membrane in galvanised sheet steel.
In this project, a special focus was placed on energy savings for the central heating considering the sheer size and the location of the building as well as its use mostly in cold weather. For this reason, the decision was made to construct a building in energy class “A”.
When building the internal partitions, special attention was placed on the acoustic insulation, considering the various activities performed inside by groups of children of varying ages.
On the exterior, colours were played with to make the appearance of the buildings more fun and create empathy with its tiny guests.
